Dr. Silvana Vallerga

Silvana Vallerga, a physicist, is the Director of Research at Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (Italy) and a Research Fellow at Imperial College London. She is the Italian representative in the Helsinki Group for Women in Science at the European Commission.

Silvana created the Minerva Code to ensure transparency in recruitment and promotion processes. She is the founder and, for the last 15 years, Scientific Director, of the International Marine Centre, a research foundation to study the ecosystem of the Mediterranean Sea. She is former president of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Global Ocean Observing System IOC/UNESCO and of MedGOOS, a consortium of 21 agencies implementing ocean forecasting in the Mediterranean. Silvana is founding member of the EuroGOOS consortium of 31 agencies. She has been vice-chairperson of the Marine Board of the European Science Foundation and the national delegate at the European Commission for four Framework Programmes.

During the last 15 years, Silvana has developed international cooperation for research and training. She coordinated the EC projects MAMA - Mediterranean network to Assess and upgrade the Monitoring and forecasting Activity in the basin and (as advisor) GRAND-GOOS Regional Alliance Network Development.

Her personal research is focussed on the adaptation of fish vision to the changing marine environment, and more recently on computational visual ecology within the broader field of Virtual Ecology. For her achievements in science she has received the Award of Helsinki University (1985) and the Minerva Award (2002).
